Offense erupts in baseball's lopsided victory over Roanoke

Box Score DANVILLE, Va. — The Averett University baseball team erupted for a season-high 19 hits in a 13-2 lop-sided non-conference victory over Roanoke College on Tuesday.

Averett (5-15) got on the board in in the opening frame following sophomore Nolan Maccabe's leadoff single. Maccabe would steal both second and third and later put the Cougars up 1-0 scoring on a wild pitch.

Roanoke (14-7) managed to tie the game with a run in the third, but the Cougars capitalized despite two outs to take a 2-1 advantage when sophomore Kyle Wilson singled to third base allowing freshman Ryan Scheiderer to cross following an error.

That's when the Cougar bats came alive, scoring two runs in the fourth to take a 4-1 lead plating runs off Maccable's RBI double and junior Brandon Hatcher's RBI ground out.

Averett benefitted from four more runs in the six inning to control an 8-1 edge. Hatcher doubled in two runs to extend the deficit to 6-1 and Scheiderer connected on a ground rule double to plate another run. Freshman Logan Albertson tallied the final RBI of the inning on a single up the middle.

Additionally, the Cougars tallied their most impressive run scoring performance the following inning, scoring five runs to put the game out of further reach.

Freshman Zelgin Jackson tallied an RBI single to left center to open the scoring, while Scheiderer clubbed his second double of the game, this time for two RBI's, before Albertson knocked in his second and third RBI's of the afternoon on a single up the middle.

Maccabe, Scheiderer, Albertson and junior Nate Tuck all recorded three hit performances for the Cougars as all nine starters tallied a hit in the victory. Scheiderer finished with his best collegiate performance registered three RBI's, while Albertson and Hatcher all drove in three runs apiece.

Furthermore, Averett stole eight bases in the effort, including two double steal situations and posted its highest run and hit total on the year.

Roanoke entered action on Tuesday coming off a doubleheader sweep of No. 12 Shenandoah University over the weekend in Old Dominion Athletic Conference play.

Junior Avery Spicer got the start on the mound for the Cougars, pitching four dominate innings, allowing only three hits and striking out six batters, reaching the 50 career strikeout threshold with a first inning strikeout.

Sophomore Tyler Nuckols earned his first collegiate victory, tossing a scoreless fifth inning striking out a batter, while senior Tanner Bradshaw, sophomore David Asbill and senior Kyle Lamantia all combined for a scoreless sixth through eighth inning of work, posting two strikeouts and only allowing three hits.

The Cougars return to action on Sunday when they battle Shenandoah on the road in a non-conference doubleheader at 1 p.m.
