DANVILLE, Va. – The Averett University baseball team lost a hard-fought extra-inning USA South Conference contest 7-6 to Greensboro College on Sunday in its season finale.
Averett (9-22, 7-11 USA South) began with a1-0 advantage with a run in the first, but Greensboro (15-18, 7-11 USA South) tied the game with a run in the second.
Senior
Zach Cameron put the Cougars back ahead with an RBI single in the bottom half of the inning, however, the Pride answered with two runs in the third inning to take a 3-2 edge.
Averett regained the lead with three runs in the fourth inning 5-3, scoring on an RBI single by sophomore
Nolan Maccabe and two runs off the bat of freshman
Zelgin Jackson.
The Pride rallied in the top of the fifth to even the game 5-5 with two runs and managed to slide ahead for a 6-5 lead following a solo homerun.
Maccabe answered the solo blast with another RBI single to even the game 6-6, but neither team was able to gain an edge over the final two frames as Sunday's contest was decided by a sacrifice fly out in the 10th inning.
Both Maccabe and Jackson recorded two hit performances for the Cougars, while senior
Tanner Bradshaw finished with a perfect 4-4 stat line, scoring two runs.
Senior
Ben Kimberlin threw well in relief for Averett tossing 2.1 scoreless innings, allowing two hits and striking out two batters.
Averett honored its 2021 senior class on Sunday as
Ryan Traylor,
Cole Spain, Kimberlin,
Carter Minter, Cameron, Bradshaw and
Kyle Lamantia were all recognized prior to first pitch.
