ATLANTA, Ga. — Averett University volleyball held off LaGrange College 3-2 in five sets to finish play at Oglethorpe University's Stormy Petrel Classic on Saturday. The Cougars won 20-25, 25-22, 25-18, 22-25, 15-12 in a non-conference meeting between conference foes.
 
Averett (8-0) and LaGrange (0-6) were tied 12-12 in the deciding fifth set, but the Cougars prevailed by taking the final three points off Panther attack errors.
Senior 
Sarah Shropshire, who was named the USA South Conference Player of the Week last Monday, had her second consecutive 20-kill game with 20 kills to go with eight digs. Junior 
Jessica Beam and sophomore 
Destiny McIntosh each added nine kills, with junior 
Lauren Montren notching eight kills. Sophomore 
Erin Gray totaled 20 digs, while Montren had 17 digs and freshman 
Kinsley Stevens had 14 digs. Stevens also led the team with 29 assists.
The Cougars bounced back after dropping the opening set to take the next two games and go up 2-1 in the match. Averett was up 17-16 in the fourth frame before LaGrange battled back to take it.
 
Averett returns to action on Sept. 18 when the Cougars face Virginia Wesleyan University and the University of Lynchburg in a tri-match in Lynchburg, Virginia.
