GREENSBORO, N.C. — Averett University football dominated Greensboro College 48-2 to open USA South Conference play on Saturday afternoon on Pride Field.
Junior quarterback
Bryce Jackson threw for a career-high five touchdowns and surpassed 300 passing yards for the fourth consecutive game before being lifted in the third quarter with Averett (2-1, 1-0 USA South) holding an comfortable 42-2 lead over Greensboro (0-2, 0-1 USA South).
Averett controlled the game from the start as senior linebacker
Nicholas Mintz forced a fumble on Greensboro's first play from scrimmage and senior defensive end
Isaac Mosby recovered it. Two plays later, Jackson found senior receiver
Jarrod Mosby wide open behind the defense for a 22-yard touchdown — the first of three on the day for Mosby.
On Averett's next possession, Jackson and Mosby connected again for a 48-yard touchdown to push Averett's lead to 14-0. Mosby eclipsed 1,000 career receiving yards with the play.
Jackson also had an 8-yard touchdown pass to senior
Chase Nixon in the first quarter, an 83-yard touchdown to Mosby and a 65-yard touchdown pass to Nixon in the second quarter as Averett grew its lead to 42-2 by halftime. Sophomore
Rodney Scott also contributed a 6-yard rushing touchdown — the first of his career — in the second quarter in between Mosby's third touchdown and Nixon's second score of the day.
Greensboro, which now has been outscored by Averett 256-8 over the past five meetings, scored its lone two points on a safety when the Cougars had a mishap on a punt attempt.
Junior kicker
Will Caviness added a 25-yard field goal and matched his career-long with a 46-yard field goal in the third quarter to extend Averett's lead to 48-2.
Jackson finished the day with 309 yards passing on 15-for-22 passing to go with his five touchdown tosses. Mosby made the most of his three catches, finishing with 153 yards and three touchdowns. Nixon also surpassed 100 yards with six catches for 110 yards. Scott led the ground attack with a career-high 90 yards on 15 carries.
Jackson's five-touchdown day was one shy of the program's single-game record, but his fourth consecutive 300-yard game through the air gives him the most such career performances by a Cougar quarterback. Mosby also tied the program mark for most wide receiver touchdown receptions in a single game with three, the sixth such occurrence over the course of the team's 22-season history.
The Cougars' offense outgained Greensboro 515-65 in yardage and had a 26-4 advantage in first downs thanks to a solid effort from Averett's defense.
The Averett defense got a team-high six tackles for
Lake Hojnacki and five from junior
Isaiah Sharper. Senior
Austin Paynter also added a fumble recovery against the Pride, which led to Caviness' second field goal.
Averett returns home to play Maryville College on Saturday, Sept. 25, at 6 p.m. Averett is hosting a food truck rodeo from noon-6 p.m. and Ave & Rett's Kids Day activities from 3:30-6 p.m. prior to kickoff.
