The Series vs. Virginia Wesleyan: Since 2005, the two teams are 7-7 against each other. The Marlins won the last matchup 3-0 in 2019.
The Series vs. Lynchburg: The Cougars are 16-6 against the Hornets dating back to 1987. Averett has won four straight in the series.
Averett at a Glance: Averett, the defending USA South Conference East Division champion, was picked as the preseason favorite in the East again in 2021. The Cougars have opened the season 8-0, after going 3-0 at Oglethorpe University's Stormy Petrel Classic last weekend. For the second week in a row, senior Sarah Shropshire was named the USA South Conference Player of the Week. Meanwhile, sophomore Erin Gray earned USA South Defensive Player of the Week last Monday. The Cougars are receiving votes in the latest AVCA poll.
Virginia Wesleyan at a Glance: Virginia Wesleyan is off to a solid start. The Marlins are coming off a 3-0 sweep of St. Mary's College of Maryland on Wednesday. Prior to that, the Marlins suffered three consecutive losses at Johns Hopkins University's tournament against two national ranked teams and one team that is receiving votes. The Marlins and Hornets face off at 1 p.m. prior to the Marlins playing Averett.
Lynchburg at a Glance: The Hornets are 2-5 this season so far, but won their ODAC opener 3-0 Wednesday against Guilford College.
