STAUNTON, Va. — Averett University volleyball opened USA South Conference play with a 3-0 sweep of Mary Baldwin University on Wednesday night. The Cougars won 25-15, 25-18 and 25-16.
Averett (9-2, 1-0 USA South) won its conference opener for the third consecutive year with the help of 12 kills from senior
Zamyiah Mangum. The Cougars, who hit whopping .600 as a team, also got six kills apiece from junior
Morgan Barnes and sophomore
Emma Nash. Nash also led the team with three solo blocks. Sophomore
Erin Gray had a team-high eight digs and six service aces, while freshman setter
Kinsley Stevens totaled 29 assists for the Averett.
As a team, Averett had only five attack errors all game and none in the first set as it finished the first frame with a .818 hitting percentage.
The win made Averett 31-0 all-time against Mary Baldwin (4-8, 0-1 USA South).
Averett returns home to host a conference tri-match with Methodist University and Pfeiffer University on Friday, beginning at 3 p.m. The Cougars will honor their senior class prior to the 7 p.m. match against Pfeiffer.
