DANVILLE, Va. — The Averett University men's soccer team dropped a hard-fought 1-0 decision to Piedmont University on Sunday in non-conference action.
Piedmont (2-1) benefited on a goal in the 21st minute coming off a throw in to take a 1-0 advantage and hold on for the win.
Averett (1-2) had chances through the match to even the deficit, one coming off the foot of sophomore
Agustin Jaraba from the right side of the 18-yard box on a free kick that struck the left corner of the cross bar and nearly tied the game.
The Cougars finished with a 15-9 shot advantage and matched the Lions with six shots on frame.
Sophomore
Tyler Yates turned away five shots on the afternoon while Averett added a 9-5 corner advantage and controlled possession for much of the game.
The Cougars return to action on Wednesday when they host Hampden-Sydney College on Daly Field at Frank R. Campbell Stadium.
