NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — The Averett University women's basketball team opened the season with a 92-39 non-conference road loss to No. 6 Christopher Newport University on Tuesday night.

Natija Pate both pulled down nine rebounds. Pate also had two blocks while freshman
Brianna Sams had three steals for Averett in her collegiate debut against nationally ranked Christopher Newport (1-0), which finished 26-1 last season before falling in the NCAA Round of 16.

The Cougars couldn't overcome a fast start by the Captains, who led 53-16 at the break.

As a team Averett pulled down 38 total rebounds.

The Cougars are back in action on Friday at 5:30 p.m. when they open up play at N.C. Wesleyan University's Jean Edge Classic against Carolina University.
