DANVILLE, Va. — Averett University men's basketball had its eight-game win streak halted in a 73-63 non-conference loss to University of Mary Washington on Thursday in the Grant Center.
Playing its second game in less than 24 hours, Averett (10-9) fell behind early behind the shot shooting of Mary Washington (15-4), which hit nearly 48 percent of its shots from the floor in the opening period. The Eagles also hit 16 of 16 free throws in the first half to help Mary Washington take a 43-27 lead into halftime.
Averett made a solid run in the second half as junior
Bryson McLaughlin was the recipient of several nice passes from junior
Raja Milton, which resulted in the Cougars trimming the Mary Washington lead down to 47-43 with 13:41 remaining. Although the Cougars stayed within striking distance, they couldn't get any closer than four points the rest of the way before the Eagles pulled away late.
Junior
Corey Baldwin poured in 20 points for the second consecutive night while also snagging seven rebounds. McLaughlin added 12 points and seven rebounds off the bench. Sophomore
Jason Sellars II led the Cougars with eight rebounds. Milton had five assists.
Mary Washington had four players score in double figures, led by Anias Saunders' 22 points.
Averett returns to action on Saturday when the Cougars travel to play conference newcomer Southern Virginia University at 4 p.m.
