DANVILLE, Va. — Averett University baseball lost its series opener to Southern Virginia University 9-3 on Thursday afternoon at Owen-Fulton Field.

Averett (7-14, 2-2 USA South) led 1-0 after senior
Brandon Hatcher singled home freshman
Kevin Zischke in the third inning. That held until Southern Virginia (4-7. 1-3 USA South) exploded for eight runs on five hits and an error in the top of the fifth as the Knights surged ahead 8-1.
After Southern Virginia added another run in the top of the eighth with a sacrifice fly, the Cougars responded with a run in the eighth on sophomore
Hudson Rowe's RBI single, and another run in the ninth on freshman
Joseph Allen's RBI single.
Despite the loss, Averett outhit Southern Virginia 10-8. Rowe and junior
Nolan Maccabe each went 3-for-4 at the plate for Averett.
