BREVARD, N.C. — Averett University baseball lost the rubber match of its non-conference series 13-10 to Brevard College in a slugfest Sunday afternoon.
Averett (2-10) jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning on senior Brandon Hatcher's RBI double and freshman Kevin Zischke's two-run homer. Brevard (9-5) answered right back in the bottom half of the frame, scoring four runs to go in front 4-3. The Tornados added a run in the second to go up by three runs.
Senior Avery Spicer crushed a two-run homer in the third to get Averett back within one, only to have Brevard answer again with a run in bottom of the third.
Averett's offense broke through again in the seventh, plating four runs — including two on senior Nate Tuck's two-run double and one on freshman Thomas Barker's pinch-hit RBI single — to go ahead 9-7.
Brevard once again responded with a big inning of its own, scoring six runs in the bottom of the seventh. Although Averett got one run back in the ninth, the Tornados held on.
Averett and Brevard each finished with 19 hits. Hatcher had a 4-for-5 day at the plate for the Cougars, who also got three hits apiece from Tuck and sophomore Hudson Rowe. Spicer and sophomore Brandt Brophy also had multiple hits.
Averett returns home to play the University of Lynchburg on Tuesday.
