GREENSBORO, N.C. — Averett University softball lost a pair of conference road games at Greensboro College on Saturday. The Pride won 9-1 in six innings, then topped Averett 5-1 in Game 2.
Â
In Game 1, Averett took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth on senior
Hannah Thompson's solo homer to right-center field. Greensboro answered back in the bottom of the fifth. With runners on first and second, the Pride hit a single to right field. The throw to second base was wide on the play to try to get the runner, who had held up to see if the ball would be caught. That allowed the tying run to score from third. Greensboro added an RBI single to right-center to go in front 2-1. Then, with the bases loaded and two out, Greensboro got a two-run hit to center field to extend its lead to 4-1.
In the bottom of the sixth, Greensboro added an RBI single to left field, then got a walk-off grand slam to end the game after only six innings.
Â
In the second game of the day, Greensboro jumped ahead 1-0 with an RBI double to left-center in the first inning. Averett senior
Anna Coleman tied the game, 1-1, with her RBI single to center field, which scored senior
Lauren Johnston from second base.
Â
The Pride retook the lead in the third with a two-run triple down the right field line and a sacrifice fly. Up 4-1, Greensboro got and RBI double to right-center to give itself a four-run lead.
Averett finishes the regular season with a road series at Meredith College on Wednesday.
