DANVILLE, Va. —
Steve Alcorn resigned as Averett University softball head coach on Monday after three seasons with the Cougars.
"I am stepping down as head coach to spend much needed time with family and to explore other opportunities," Alcorn said. "I can't thank
Meg Stevens and Averett enough for providing me the opportunity to work with such a great bunch of people."
Alcorn was 41-29 overall with a 19-13 mark in USA South Conference play during his tenure.
Named Averett's head coach in July 2019, Alcorn's 2020 team was 10-2 before its season was cut short due to the pandemic. The Cougars went 13-13 in 2021 and finished 18-14 this spring, including a win over No. 1 Christopher Newport University and a win over USA South East Division champion Pfeiffer University.
"We'd like to thank Steve for his time at Averett and we wish him the best on his future endeavors," said Stevens, Averett's vice president, director of athletics and campus operations. Â
Averett will begin an
immediate national search for its next head coach for the softball program, which has won two conference titles and has two NCAA postseason appearances since 2015 among numerous individual accolades.
