STAUNTON, Va. — Averett University softball blanked Mary Baldwin University 6-0, but fell 3-2 when the Fighting Squirrels got a walk-off win in Game 2 as they split a conference doubleheader on Wednesday.<br />

In the opener, Averett (14-10, 5-5 USA South) took a 2-0 lead in the top of the third on back-to-back RBI singles from sophomore
Chloe Horton and senior
Anna Coleman. The Cougars added another run in the fourth on freshman
Salem Hill's solo blast to left field for her first career home run.<br />

With senior
Hannah Thompson cruising in the circle, Averett added three more runs in the seventh for insurance. Thompson hit a two-run blast and senior
Lauren Johnston immediately followed with a solo homer to extend the lead to 6-0 over Mary Baldwin (6-19-1, 1-7 USA South).<br />

Hannah Jones each had two hits for the Cougars in the first game of the doubleheader.<br />

In Game 2, Averett led 1-0 after Horton hit a sacrifice fly to score junior
Hannah Heath in the third. The Cougars added another run when Jones scored from third on a rundown play at second base in the fifth. Averett's 2-0 lead was erased in half in the bottom of the inning when a run scored on a wild pitch and the tying run came home on an RBI single.<br />

In the bottom of the seventh, Mary Baldwin loaded the bases with two outs, then got an RBI single to win it and steal Game 2.<br />
<br />
Johnston and Jones each had two hits in the second game.<br />

Averett hosts Salem College on Saturday for Senior Day.<br />
