GREENSBORO, N.C. — Averett University baseball lost its final game of the season 6-5 at Greensboro College in Game 3 of their conference series Sunday. The Cougars won the three-game series 2-1.
Greensboro (15-21, 10-11 USA South) broke a 5-5 tie in the bottom of the eighth with a bases-loaded walk, which proved to be the difference.
Averett (14-26, 7-14 USA South) opened with a 1-0 lead when junior
Nolan Maccabe scored on a wild pitch. The Pride answered with three runs in the third to take a 3-1 lead.
The Cougars battled back, getting within 3-2 on senior
Avery Spicer's RBI single in the sixth. Averett then surged ahead in the seventh as senior
Nate Tuck stroked a game-tying RBI single. Sophomore
Brandt Brophy put the Cougars in front with his RBI single, and he later scored on an error as Averett held a 5-3 advantage.
Greensboro tied the game in the seventh on an two-run single before getting the go-ahead run in the eighth.
Brophy went 3-for-5 at the plate for Averett, while Spicer and freshman
Cole McLain each had two hits.
Freshman
Gavin Colwell and sophomore
Eric Hanson each had scoreless outings in relief on the mound.
The game not only marked the end of the season, it also marked the end of an era. It was the last game for Averett in any sport as members of the USA South Conference. The Cougars will move to the Old Dominion Athletic Conference in July after more than four decades in the USA South. Averett baseball has been part of the conference since 1996 when the program began. The Cougars won the 2003 conference title for their lone NCAA Tournament appearance.
