DANVILLE, Va. - The Averett University women's basketball team fell in heartbreaking fashion 53-52 to Virginia Wesleyan University on Wednesday night in the Grant Center.
Averett (3-14, 1-9 ODAC) scored 28 points in the fourth quarter to erase Virginia Wesleyan's (6-11, 2-8 ODAC) 14-point lead, tying the game with 1:37 left from freshman
Ny'Kerasia Coleman's fast-break three-pointer to bring the game to 47-47. The Cougars and Marlins would exchange leads for the rest of the game until a Virginia Wesleyan free-throw with three seconds left would push the Marlins ahead in the final seconds. Averett had one last contested look but it didn't fall as the buzzer sounded.
In the fourth quarter Averett shot 47.3 percent from the floor and 57.1 percent from behind the arc.
Coleman scored 11 points in the outing and drained three three-pointers in the fourth quarter. Junior
Jihnez Hutchinson had a double-double night, scoring 11 points and pulling down 12 rebounds to lead Averett's rebounding efforts.
Averett's bench would step up big, scoring 31 points. As a team, the Cougars out rebounded the Marlins 49 to 46.
