DANVILLE, Va. — Averett University football lost 53-24 to Bridgewater College in Old Dominion Athletic Conference action on Saturday on Daly Field at Frank R. Campbell Stadium.
Bridgewater (5-2, 3-1 ODAC) took advantage of four interceptions and two fumbles, and the Eagles scored twice on turnovers to help pull away.
After Bridgewater took a 14-0 lead early on a pair of rushing touchdowns, Averett (3-4, 0-4 ODAC) pulled within 14-7 immediately after freshman
Christian Harrell recovered a muffed punt on the Eagles' 4-yard line. Sophomore
Shyheim Watlington ran in on the next play from scrimmage for a 4-yard touchdown with 7:45 left in first quarter.
The Eagles added another scoring drive with a rushing touchdown late in the first quarter and converted a two-point conversion to extend their lead to 22-7.
In the second quarter, Averett got a 26-yard field goal from fifth-year senior
Will Caviness to get within 22-10, but Bridgewater answered with a 32-yard field goal, then got a 30-yard interception return for a touchdown midway through the quarter to take a 32-10 advantage into halftime.
Bridgewater broke off a 68-yard touchdown run early in the third quarter to make it 39-10. Although Averett responded with a 5-yard touchdown catch on fourth down by sophomore
Isaiah Lytton from fifth-year senior
Bryce Jackson, Bridgewater scored two more times before the end of the period. The Eagles got a 7-yard touchdown run, then scored on a 26-yard fumble recovery when a punt attempt was fumbled on the snap, pushing Bridgewater's lead to 53-17.
Averett added a 4-yard touchdown run by sophomore
Dennis Mingledoff early in the fourth quarter to make the score 53-24.
Fifth-year senior defensive end
Jahlin Russell led the Cougars with 10 tackles and three quarterback hurries, while fifth-year senior
Carey Dickinson added nine tackles. Senior
Seth Harden had Averett's lone sack.
Offensively, Lytton had 14 carries for a net of 82 yards while junior receiver
Shawn Watlington had four catches for 71 yards.
Averett returns to action on the road on Saturday, Oct. 28, at Shenandoah University.
