ASHLAND, Va. — Averett University football lost 59-7 to No. 10 Randolph-Macon College in Old Dominion Athletic Conference play on Saturday.
Randolph-Macon (5-0, 2-0 ODAC) picked off A pass on the Cougars' first play from scrimmage to help set up a quick touchdown two plays later as the Yellow Jackets went ahead 7-0 on Averett (3-2, 0-2 ODAC).
Randolph-Macon's second drive also ended with a touchdown, but the Cougars' defense forced a fumble on the Yellow Jackets' third drive of the first quarter.
After Randolph-Macon scored twice on two long passes in the second quarter to extend its lead to 28-0, Averett scored its lone touchdown of the day with 1:34 left in the half. Fifth-year senior quarterback Bryce Jackson found junior receiver Shawn Watlington for an 8-yard touchdown across the middle in the end zone. It's the fourth consecutive game Watlington has caught at least one touchdown.
The Yellow Jackets' high-powered offense, which put up 70 points the week prior against Guilford College, added three more touchdowns in the third quarter and a field goal and a touchdown in the fourth to pull away.
Averett's defense held Randolph-Macon to more than 70 yards less of total offense than it was averaging entering the game. Junior Kendall Spriggins had a team-high seven tackles.
Redshirt freshman receiver Trevor Testerman caught five passes for 63 yards while Watlington had four receptions for 47 yards and a score. Jackson finished with 171 passing yards.
Averett returns home to host Hampden-Sydney College on Homecoming Weekend Oct. 14.
