FOREST, Va. — Averett University men's wrestling had nine wrestlers earn a top-four ranking in their respective weight classes in the 2023-24 Old Dominion Athletic Conference preseason individual rankings, which was released by the league on Wednesday. Four of the 10 weight classes have an Averett wrestler ranked No. 1.

Averett junior Mason Barrett, a 2023 All-American, was the No. 1 ranked wrestler in the ODAC preseason listings at 125 points, with junior 149-pounder Hunter Campbell, 165-pounder Anthony Taylor and 184-pounder George Moseley also earning the top spot in their weight classes. Moseley is a former NCAA national qualifier and NWCA All-American who took last season off.

No other ODAC school has more than two wrestlers ranked No. 1.

Sophomore Xavier Swanson (157 pounds), junior Khalil Mitchell (174 pounds), senior Jamar Christian (197 pounds) and senior Sheldon Davis (285 pounds) were ranked second in their respective weight classes, with senior Daniel Porter ranking fourth at 133 pounds.

With the top three teams within one point of each other, Averett was voted third in the ODAC preseason poll, which was announced Tuesday. Averett earned a three-way share of the ODAC Championship last season in its first year as members of the ODAC. Those three same teams — Washington and Lee University, Roanoke College and Averett — were picked as the top three teams in the preseason poll, with Washington and Lee and Roanoke sharing the top spot with 31 points each and Averett right behind them at 30 points.

The Cougars begin their seventh season as a program and fifth under head coach Blake Roulo on Nov. 1 with a road dual at Southern Virginia University.
