PETERSBURG, Va. — Averett University men's basketball prepared for the start of its upcoming season with an exhibition at Division II Virginia State University on Saturday. The Cougars stayed within striking distance before falling 73-57.
Averett (0-0) opens its season on Nov. 9 at Pfeiffer University.
The Cougars led 20-17 early on redshirt junior Jem Lowrance's 3-pointer with 8:01 left in the first half. Virginia State jumped ahead, taking a 37-30 advantage into halftime.
Averett got within five points early in the second half before the Trojans extended their lead.
Junior Zach Shumate had 10 points, with junior Bryce Shaw finishing with nine points, nine rebounds and three steals. Senior Jason Sellars II added eight points and eight rebounds for the Cougars.
