GRANTHAM, Pa. — Averett University wrestling completed the Messiah University Petrofes Invitational with three champions and eight individual placers on Saturday afternoon.. 

Averett placed fourth in the Tournament, just a half-point shy of Alvernia University that was in the No. 3 spot and just 3.5 points from second place. At 125 pounds, junior Mason Barrett was crowned champion. Senior George Moseley took first place in the 184-pound weight class and senior Jamar Christian secured himself a first-place spot as well.

Barrett wrestled his way into the semifinals in Day 2. He defeated Isiac Paulino in a 4-3 decision to advance to the finals. Barrett secured first place after he defeated No. 5 Joey Lamparelli from Muhlenburg College. 

Moseley did not skip a beat going into Day 2 of the tournament. He defeated Bryce McCloskey by an 11-2 major decision in the semifinals. Moseley was crowned champion after defeating Ryder Slayton with a 6-0 decision win.

Christian advanced to the finals following a tight 5-4 decision win against Sawyer Dereszynski. He did not allow his opponent a chance in the finals, defeating Nick Rodgers by a 21-4 technical fall.

In the 157-pound weight class, sophomore Xavier Swanson lost in the quarterfinals, but he battled his way back to the third-place match, where he lost to Garrett Cornell to take fourth place. 

Junior Anthony Taylor lost to Matt Lackman in the semifinals and won by a 24-8 technical fall over Blake Kaminski to make it to the third-place match. He took fourth place in the tournament after losing to Myles Leonard in the 165-pound weight class.

At 174 pounds, sophomore Michael Gabbard took seventh place after defeating Tyson Hoopes by a 12-5 decision.

After losing to Moseley in the quarterfinals to Moseley, sophomore Nolan Gerwitz battled his way in the consolation rounds to take eighth place.

Heavyweight senior Sheldon Davis managed to secure eighth place after getting a few wins in the consolation rounds, finishing the tournament 4-3.

The Cougars are back in action on Dec. 9 at 9 a.m. when they host the Cougar Duals.
