Winchester Va. — Averett University men's wrestling put on a show in the 2023 Old Dominion Athletic Conference Championship with three champions in their individual weight classes on Saturday night, scoring the second-most points in the tournament with 122.
Senior
Hai Siu, sophomore
Anthony Taylor and graduate student
Alex Turley all brought home championships as three other Cougars finished as the runner-up in their weight classes.
"I thought we wrestled great as a team," Averett wrestling head coach
Blake Roulo said. "Having seven wrestlers make the All-ODAC Team with three champs being dominant in the ways they scored points shows that we are wrestling our best at the right time. I'm looking forward to NCAA Regionals with this group of guys."
Siu was named champion in the 149-pound weight class after defeating Elijah Blackwell in an 8-3 decision. With that win, he made Averett history being the University's first ever ODAC Champion along with being a four-time conference champion over the course of his career.
Taylor defeated Jacob Cherry in a tight 7-5 decision to clinch the first-place spot in the 165-pound weight class, he finished with three total decision wins on the day.
Turley pinned every opponent he faced in the 174-pound weight class. He was crowned champion in style after he pinned Mark Troni at the 3:55 mark in the first-place match.
At 125 pounds, sophomore
Mason Barrett faced off against Washington and Lee's Riley Parker for the second time this season in the first-place match. Barrett gave Parker a run for his money, taking the match to sudden victory, but lost in a tight 3-1 decision.
Alvarado defeated Zane Cox in a 3-2 decision in the semifinals. He faced Washington and Lee's Ryan Luth once again when they met in the first-place match of the 157-pound weight class. Alvarado ultimately lost by a major decision to Luth who is nationally ranked No. 5 in the Nation according to the National Wrestling Coaches Association Division III rankings.
At 184 pounds, Mitchell took second place after losing to Mahlic Sallah by decision in the first-place match. Prior to his match with Sallah, he defeated Khalil Belk in the semifinals by a 5-1 decision.

Daniel Porter secured third place in the 133-pound weight class after he defeated Sean Rinebolt in a 9-2 decision.
Averett had seven wrestlers earn All-ODAC honors based on their performance at the conference championships. The top three in each weight class earned All-ODAC honors, with champions earning First Team, runner-ups earning Second Team and third-place finishers earning Third Team.
At 141 pounds, sophomore
