SALEM, Va. — Averett University wrestling wrapped up the Southeast Futures Tournament with two champions, two runner-ups and 11 individual placers total on Sunday night. 

At 125 pounds, Daniel Parkulo took first place after he defeated Stephen Bowden by a 20-5 technical fall in the semifinals and followed up with a 5-3 decision win against Dylan Coward in the championship. Freshman Michael Gabbard defeated Ray Hutton by a 11-10 decision and scored big with a pin against Alexis Fidalgo to take first place in the 174-pound weight class.

Freshman Xavier Swanson placed second in the tournament after he defeated Andrew McDougal in the semifinals by a 6-2 decision at 165 pounds. In the 184-pound weight class, sophomore Noah Harris took second after defeating Russell Endicott in his first match by a 12-5 decision and advancing to the finals after a forfeit.Junior Alex Logsdon secured third place in the 125-pound weight class after he defeated Stephen Bowden by technical fall in the third-place round. At 197 pounds, junior Jaleel Jones defeated freshman Nate Mallery by a 7-1 decision to take third place.

Heavyweight sophomore Will Longhurst earned a 16-6 major decision win against teammate Braeden Fluke to take third place. Freshman Landon Neal took fourth place after advancing to the third-place match, but ultimately losing to Joe Jackson by fall in the 141-pound weight class. At 133 pounds, junior Olli Karjalainen placed fourth after he pinned Trent Proctor at the 4:43 mark. At 149 pounds, junior Marcus De La Rosa defeated Jackson Higgins to advance to the third-place match. He took fourth place after he lost to Alexander Quintano.

Freshman Carter Erickson pinned Russel Endicott in the consolation semifinals, but lost in the third-place match to take fourth in the 184-pound weight class. Mallery faced two teammates in the tournament. He defeated junior Sheldon Davis by a 7-5 decision in the consolation semifinals. He lost to Jones in the third-place match to secure fourth place. Heavyweight freshman Braeden Fluke took fourth place after defeating freshman Andrew Jackson and winning by forfeit in the consolation semifinals.

The Cougars are back in action on Feb. 24, to compete in the NCAA Southeast Regionals.
