YORK, Pa. — On Friday, Averett University wrestling concluded Day 1 of the NCAA Southeast Regionals by making history with five semifinalists. It was the most semifinalists in program history, breaking the prior record of four last season.
Sophomore
Jesse Alvarado made no friends battling his way to Day 2 of the tournament. His dominant performance resulted in two pins. He pinned Marcus at the 6:31 mark and followed up in the quarterfinals, scoring a fall against Chris Everdale in the 157-pound weight class.
"It was a day with a lot of ups and downs," Averett wrestling head coach
Blake Roulo said. However, sending five guys to semifinals, it is hard not to look at the positives. We have the opportunity to have half of the starting lineup to be NCAA Qualifiers. We just have to wrestle the Averett way and the guys will do great."
At 125 pounds, sophomore
Mason Barrett dominated Jaden Nelson, winning by a 9-1 major decision to start the day. In the quarterfinals, he won by decision against Gustav Petruske 9-5 to punch his ticket to the semifinals. Senior
Hai Siu defeated Dawson Miller by injury default. He met Colin Bridges once again, defeating him for the third time this season by an 8-4 decision to advance to the semifinals in the 149-pound weight class.
At 165 pounds, sophomore
Anthony Taylor demolished Jalen Cornelius with a 12-4 major-decision win. He faced Morgan Peterson once again this season for the third time, defeating him by a 15-10 decision. Graduate Student
Alex Turley has a chance to be a national qualifier for the third time in his career. He pinned Kyle Lee at the 4:19 mark and defeated Luke Moore by a 3-2 decision in the quarter finals in the 174-pound weight class.
The Cougars are back in action on Saturday to conclude the NCAA Southeast Regionals beginning at 11 a.m.
