ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. — Averett University baseball fell to N.C. Wesleyan University 15-5 on Tuesday afternoon in non-conference action.
Averett (3-4-1) was down 3-0 going into the fourth inning with no hits in the game. The Cougars were gifted with base runners early in the inning after freshman
Chris Byrd was walked and junior
Chase Davis was hit by pitch. With two runners aboard, senior
Kyle Wilson hit a three-run shot to center field to tie the game up 3-3. Wilson had two of Averett's four hits on the afternoon.
In the fifth inning, the Cougars took the lead after a series of walks and hit by pitches to score sophomore
Gavin Colwell to put Averett up 4-3. N.C. Wesleyan (8-1) had a big inning in the bottom half of the fifth to take the lead once more, 7-4, and kept building that lead. Averett tried to stop the bleeding, scoring one run in the top of the sixth inning, but it was not enough to best the Battling Bishops, who had another big inning to pull away.
The Cougars are scheduled to play next on Friday against No. 11 Christopher Newport University beginning at noon at the Methodist University Invitational.
