DANVILLE, Va. — Averett University baseball fell to Southern Virginia University 8-4 on Tuesday evening at Owen-Fulton Field.
Averett (3-10-1, 0-2 ODAC) was tied up 1-1 with Southern Virginia (7-5, 0-0 USA South) going into the bottom of the third inning. Sophomore
Preston Robbins lined a ball towards the pitcher that kicked off his outreached glove, resulting in a single. Freshman
Chris Byrd smoked a single up the middle to advance Robbins to second. Senior
Kyle Wilson batted in Robbins following a single hit to left field to put the Cougars up 2-1.
In the second inning, Byrd swatted a single to center field.
Kyle Wilson was walked, advancing Byrd to second. Junior
Brandt Brophy poked a single to left field, scoring Byrd from second to make the score 1-0. The Knights answered back in the next inning to tie the game up 1-1. In the fifth inning, sophomore
Nick Romano singled to left center. He got into scoring position after reaching second on a wild pitch. Brophy scored Romano after slapping a single into left field. The Cougars held onto their lead until Southern Virginia's big inning in the top of the eighth. With two outs, the Knights managed to score four runs.

In the bottom of the eighth, the Cougars managed to score one more run after a triple hit by
Kyle Wilson to left center field followed by a single by sophomore
Tyler Wilson up the middle to make the score 4-3. Southern Virginia continued put runs on the board in the ninth to further extend their lead.Â
Brophy and Byrd were at the center of the Cougar's offense, both went 2-4 and were accredited with an RBI each.
The Cougars are back in action on Saturday to face Bridgewater College in conference-play for a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m.
