DANVILLE, Va.— Averett University esports sits in first place in its league in Valorant and is scheduled to face the only undefeated team in its league, Roger Williams University, on Tuesday at 8 p.m.
"I'm really proud of how our Valorant team is doing," said Colton Paul, Averett's esports director. "They are coming together, they are improving every week."
The Cougars are in two separate Valorant leagues, with one team sitting in first in the ECAC. The team has six members featuring freshman Mateo Duarte, sophomore Alejandro Lucas Nielfa, freshman Nicole Cowboy, junior Peyton Ruff, senior Jesse Mustajoki, and junior Casper Mellby.
The Cougars are playing to win, but they also want to have some fun while doing it.
"I think we finally have the team to do something and make a deep run," Ruff said. "Being undefeated doesn't mean anything, we are just going out there, having fun and doing our best."
Across the board, the team did not plan on treating RWU any different from past opponents they have faced this season.
"Just play the same way that we have been doing, it is not anything different," Duarte said. "We'll win just how we have been doing."
The matchup will be streamed on the team's Twitch.
The Cougars are scheduled to begin their playoff run next week, and they are hoping that winning this matchup will give them the momentum they need going into the playoffs.
Averett esports competes in a number of games in addition to Valorant. They also play Rainbow 6 Siege, FIFA and Rocket League. They look to make additions for next season. Paul said.
