DANVILLE, Va. — Averett University baseball fell to No. 5 Shenandoah University 6-2 on Sunday afternoon at Owen-Fulton Field.Â
Averett (3-15-1, 0-7 ODAC) was down 6-0 in the bottom of the sixth inning, desperately needing some runs on the scoreboard. Freshman
Chris Byrd reached first on a walk, he later advanced to second on a passed ball behind the plate. Shortly after, senior
Kyle Wilson was walked. Junior
Chase Davis came into the ball game to pinch hit for sophomore
Preston Robbins. Davis belted a ball down the right field line to send Byrd all the way home to get the Cougars on the board.
Shenandoah (19-2, 6-1 ODAC) got on the board in the top of the first inning. A double was hit to left center, the runner later advanced to third on a groundout to the second baseman. The baserunner later scored on an RBI single to lead the Cougars 1-0. In the third inning, the Hornets strung together a couple of hits to tack on three more runs. Shenandoah added two more runs in the sixth inning. The Cougars managed to hold them scoreless for the remainder of the game.Â
Despite Averett only having one run, the Cougars did not have a problem hitting the ball, recording seven hits in the contest. Sophomore
Caden Grider went 2-for-4 on the day with a double on the scoresheet. Redshirt freshman
John Michael Holley came into the game in the seventh inning as a reliever, allowing just one hit and no runs in an inning of work. Freshman
Blake Cheatham relieved Holley in the top of the ninth, allowing no hits and no runs in his outing.
The Cougars are back in action on March 28 when they travel to Face Ferrum College at 2:30 p.m.
