FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — Averett University baseball wrapped up play at the Armstrong Invitational on Sunday afternoon, losing 10-4 to Methodist University.
Averett (3-7-1) was down 8-1 going into the sixth inning and needed to do something to get their offense going. Sophomore
Preston Robbins swatted a single to left field with one out. Junior
Brandt Brophy belted a double down the left field line to advance Robbins to third. Sophomore
Nick Romano sent Robbins home and advanced Brophy to third after grounding out to the shortstop. Shortly after, junior
Drew Rabon followed up with a single to bring Brophy across the plate. A run was later scored by Rabon after a throwing error by the catcher followed by a passed ball Methodist (11-0) lead down to 8-4.
Methodist was quick to put three runs on the board in the second inning to lead the Cougars 3-0. Averett cut down the lead in the top of the fourth inning. Senior
Kyle Wilson was walked with one out. Robbins poked a single into left field to advance Wilson to second, followed by an RBI single from Brophy to cut the deficit down to 3-1. The Monarchs increased their lead in the fourth inning and continued to string together hits all game.
Robbins was on fire, going 3-3, scoring one of Averett's four runs. Brophy had an impressive performance as well, going 2-4 with an RBI double.
The Cougars are back in action on Saturday at home to face Washington and Lee University to begin conference play, starting at 12 p.m.
