ASHLAND, Va.— Averett University baseball falls to No. 12 Randolph-Macon College 12-11 and 4-1 in conference doubleheader on Sunday afternoon.
In Game 1, Averett (4-17-1, 1-9 ODAC) was down 3-1 in the second inning. Senior
Kyle Wilson kicked off the inning with a single hit to left field. Junior
Nolan Maccabe smoked a ground rule double to advance Wilson to third. Junior
Brandt Brophy slapped a two-RBI single up the middle to score Maccabe and
Kyle Wilson. Freshman
Chris Byrd stroked a single into center field to take Brophy to third. Byrd stole second and was later batted in by sophomore
Tyler Wilson after he shot a two-RBI double along the right field line, scoring Brophy as well to take a 5-3 lead.
In the first inning, Brophy was walked and later stole second to put himself in scoring position.
Tyler Wilson reached second following a fielding error by the second baseman, which advanced Brophy to third in the process. Sophomore
Caden Grider swatted a single through the left side to score Brophy and lead Randolph-Macon 1-0. In the bottom half of the inning, Randolph-Macon (19-5, 8-2 ODAC) scored three runs to take the lead.
The Hornets eventually tacked on five more runs to take the lead in the bottom half of the third. Averett eventually evened things up after stringing together some hits in the bottom of the fifth. Going into the eighth inning, the Hornets got out in front with an 11-8 lead. The Cougars managed to score a run in the eighth after sophomore
Gavin Colwell reached first on a fielding error by the shortstop to score
Tyler Wilson from third.
The Hornets took the lead once more, extending their lead to 12-10. In the top of the ninth, Maccabe started out the inning with a single hit to left center. Brophy slapped a single into center field to advance Maccabe to second, who later stole third. Maccabe went home on a throwing error by the shortstop after
Tyler Wilson lined out. Unfortunately, the Cougars were not able to score Brophy from first, leaving him stranded to end the game.
In Game 2, the Hornets struck first in the bottom of the third inning to lead the Cougars 2-0. Randolph-Macon extended their lead by two runs by the sixth inning. In the eighth inning, Maccabe poked a single to third base to start off the inning. He later stole second to be in scoring position. Maccabe advanced to third following a groundout by junior
Drew Rabon. Brophy scored Maccabe after grounding out to the shortstop to cut the deficit down to 4-1. The Hornets' defense held the Cougars to the lone run to finish out the game in the top of the ninth.
In Game 1, the Cougars had hot bats. Brophy went 3-for-4 with three RBIs. Grider went 3-for-5 with two RBIs.
The Cougars are back in action on Tuesday when they travel to face Carolina University at 3 p.m.
