Softball tops Randolph to earn doubleheader split in ODAC action

LYNCHBURG, Va. — Averett University softball took the opening game to earn a split with conference foe Randolph College on Wednesday. The Cougars won 10-2 before falling 7-0 in Game 2.

Averett (8-30, 3-15 ODAC) took the lead early in Game 1 and never looked back. Senior Lauren Nelson smacked a first-inning RBI double, and sophomore Hannah Jones' RBI single in the second put the Cougars ahead 2-0. Freshman Kailey Gates' two-run single up the middle extended the Averett lead to 4-0 in the top of the fourth.

After Randolph (20-15, 8-8 ODAC) scored a run in the fourth and fifth innings to trim its deficit to 4-2, Averett exploded for four more runs in the sixth. Senior Karsin Lee knocked a two-run single to left field before Nelson added another RBI single and a WildCat error brought Lee home to make it 8-1.

Junior Taylor Sullivan helped her own cause with an RBI double in the seventh and Lee added an RBI single to help the Cougars pull away.

Sullivan earned the win in the circle, striking out two.

Lee led the offense with three hits in the first game, with Gates, Nelson, Jones and sophomore Angela Rodriguez each totaling two hits as Averett finished with 13 hits as a team.

Offense wasn't as easy to come by in Game 2 for the Cougars. Randolph built a 5-0 lead through the first two innings and plated two more runs in the fifth. Averett scored its lone run in the top of the seventh on Jones' RBI single.

Freshman Mackenzi Luckenbaugh had two of Averett's four hits in Game 2.

Averett finishes the regular season on the road Saturday at Eastern Mennonite University.
