DANVILLE, Va. — Averett University baseball lost to Eastern Mennonite University 5-4 in Game 1 and 4-2 in Game 2 in conference doubleheader on its senior day at Owen-Fulton Field.
In Game 1, Averett (5-32-1, 2-20 ODAC) was down 1-0 in the bottom of the second inning. Junior
Hudson Rowe poked a single into center field. Senior
Kyle Wilson slapped a single to the shortstop, advancing Rowe to second. Senior
Nolan Maccabe belted a ball deep in left center for two-RBI triple.
In the top of second inning of Game 1, Eastern Mennonite (10-28, 6-16 ODAC) took the lead after an RBI single. The Royals tacked on another run in the top of the third to even things up 2-2. Junior
Brandt Brophy smoked a triple into right center. Sophomore
Cole McLain cracked an RBI double to left center to score Brophy. In the top of the seventh, the Royals hit three bunt singles in a row, one of which was an RBI. They also added two more runs in the inning to lead the Cougars 5-3. In the bottom of the ninth, Wilson hit a double down the left field line. Brophy singled through the left side to score Wilson.
In Game 2, sophomore
Nick Romano slapped a single to the shortstop and advanced to second on a throwing error in the bottom of the second. Romano advanced to third on a fly out. Wilson reached on a fielding error to score Romano from third. Sophomore
Mason Williams led off the third inning with a double down the left field line. McLain smacked a single down the left field line to score Williams. Eastern Mennonite managed to score four runs throughout the course of the game and held the Cougars to two runs.
In Game 1, Brophy went 3-for-4 with a triple and an RBI. Maccabe went 2-for-4 with with a triple. Senior
Tyler Smith allowed just two hits in two innings pitched, no runs and one strikeout.
