DANVILLE, Va.— Averett University baseball fell to Guilford College on Wednesday evening 8-1 at Owen-Fulton Field.
Averett (4-19-1, 1-10 ODAC) was down 2-0 in the bottom of the third with two outs and nobody on. Senior
Nolan Maccabe slapped a single into center field. Sophomore
Mason Williams shot a single up the middle to advance Maccabe to second, putting him in scoring position. Junior
Brandt Brophy swatted a single into left field to score Maccabe and cut the deficit down to 2-1.
Guilford (12-14-1, 3-9-1 ODAC) found itself on the board in the top of the first following an RBI single hit to left field to lead the Cougars 1-0. The Quakers tacked on an additional run in the second inning in the form of an RBI single through the right side. Averett held the Quakers scoreless until the eighth inning. Guilford strung together a couple of hits to add a few runs on the board. A three-run home run paired with a stout defense, allowed the Quakers to come out on top.
Brophy went 2-for-3 on the day and batted in the Cougars' only run of the day. Sophomore
Nathan Comer and freshman
Tim Schware had solid outings, allowing just one hit and no runs in one inning of work each. Freshman
Blake Cheatham allowed no hits or runs in his one-inning outing.
The Cougars are back in action on Saturday to face Virginia Wesleyan on the road for a doubleheader beginning at noon.
