Averett begins men’s lacrosse head coach search as Mackin announces resignation

| By:
DANVILLE, Va. — Averett University men's lacrosse head coach Anthony Mackin announced his resignation to pursue another coaching opportunity on Friday.

Averett will begin an immediate national search for its next men's lacrosse head coach.

"I'd like to thank Meg Stevens and President Dr. Tiffany Franks for giving me the opportunity and their unwavering support in entrusting me to start a lacrosse program here at Averett," Mackin said. "I'd especially like to thank my players, past and present, who, through their hard work, dedication and trust built a program. While I'm excited for the next chapter, I will miss the team and forever cherish the relationships and memories my family and I have made at Averett."

Mackin became the first coach in program history when he was hired in June 2016 to start men's lacrosse at Averett beginning in spring 2018. In six seasons, Mackin accumulated a 12-60 overall record as the Cougars established the foundation for the program initially in the USA South Athletic Conference before moving to the Old Dominion Athletic Conference for the 2022-23 academic year. He produced the 2021 USA South Rookie of the Year, one Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) All-State Selection and one Academic All-District honoree selected by the College Sports Communicators.

"Starting a new program is a difficult task, so we are grateful to Tony for his work in building the foundation for Averett men's lacrosse to help position it for a bright future," said Stevens, vice president, director of athletics and campus operations. "We wish Tony the best as he pursues another coaching opportunity."
