FOREST, Va. — Averett University football was picked sixth in the 2023 Old Dominion Athletic Conference's preseason poll, which was unveiled Monday.
Defending ODAC champion Randolph-Macon College, which advanced to the NCAA's second round last season, was picked as the 2023 league favorite with a maximum seven first-place votes. Bridgewater College, which was chosen second, earned the other first-place vote. Washington and Lee University, Shenandoah University and Hampden-Sydney College rounded out the top five, followed by Averett. Ferrum College and Guilford College tied for seventh in the poll.
Averett enters its second season as a member of the ODAC in 2023 after going 3-7 (1-6 ODAC) a year ago while producing five All-ODAC performers and one all-state selection. The Cougars return nine starters on offense and five on defense, along with their starting kicker and punter.
Averett opens its season on the road against non-conference foe Apprentice School on Sept. 1. The Cougars return home on Sept. 9 against Greensboro College.
