GREENSBORO, N.C. — No. 19 Averett University men's golf opened the fall season with a 13th-place finish as a team Tuesday in the Gate City Invitational hosted by Greensboro College at Starmount Forest Country Club.
As a team, Averett shot a collective 38-over-par 890 over 54 holes, including 11-over during Tuesday's final round on the par-71, 6,593-yard course. No. 3 Emory University ran away with the tournament, finishing at 21-under to win by 16 strokes.
Sophomore
Max Pettersson was Averett's top finisher. Pettersson shot 1-over on Tuesday to finish at 5-over for the tournament to place in a tie for 25th. Freshman
John Keba also had a solid debut, tying for 40th at 9-over. Graduate student
Caleb Kimbrough, who broke Averett's program record for career birdies on Monday, was one stroke back at 10-over, while sophomore
Miguel Rodriguez Lamana shot 19-over and junior
Killian O'Reilly finished up at 22-over.
Emory's Jackson Klutznick won medalist honors after a stellar performance. He shot 10-under on the final round, including a hole-in-one on No. 10, to finish at 16-under for the event and give him an 11-stroke victory over two who tied for second.
Averett returns to Greensboro Oct. 2-3 for Guilford College's O'Brient-Jensen Memorial.
