DANVILLE, Va. — Junior
Bryce Shaw scored a career-high 23 points, but Averett University men's basketball fell to conference foe Washington and Lee University 85-63 on Saturday afternoon in the Grant Center.
To open the game, Washington and Lee (10-5, 4-2 ODAC) jumped out to an 11-2 advantage in the first six-plus minutes before Averett (4-12, 2-6 ODAC) settled in and closed the gap to 18-11 with 11:30 left in the first half. The Generals used a 16-4 run over the next six minutes to maintain control on the scoreboard. Although the Cougars answered with a 7-2 spurt of their own, Washington and Lee took a 40-27 lead into halftime after Averett redshirt junior
Jem Lowrance hit a 3-pointer to trim to the deficit to 13 just before the break.
Four quick points to start the second half helped Averett get within single digits before Washington and Lee distanced itself down the stretch.
Shaw topped his previous career high of 22 points set last week in an overtime win at Randolph College. Senior
Jordan Lewis and freshman
Jamison Graves each added 12 points for the Cougars. Senior
Jason Sellars II finished with 12 boards — one rebound shy of matching his career high. Shaw also had a team-high four assists, which matched his career high.
Five players scored in double figures for Washington and Lee, led by Drew Harrell's 20 points.
Averett hosts conference foe University of Lynchburg on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
