BRIDGEWATER, Va. — Averett University football fell to Bridgewater College 63-7 in Old Dominion Athletic Conference play on Saturday.

Bridgewater (4-1, 2-0 ODAC), winner of four straight, jumped ahead 14-0 in the first quarter thanks to a pair of passing touchdowns. Averett (2-3, 0-2 ODAC) took advantage of a short field on its ensuing possession, which helped the Cougars get on the scoreboard. Freshman quarterback Brock Hoffman hit senior receiver Shawn Watlington for a 24-yard pass. Three plays later, sophomore running back Santana Wooten juked out two defenders and made his way into the end zone for am 8-yard touchdown to pull Averett within 14-7.

Bridgewater, however, stole the momentum right back by returning the kickoff 88 yards for a touchdown. The Eagles scored three more touchdowns in the second quarter to take a 42-7 lead into halftime.

The Eagles tacked on another rushing touchdown in the third quarter, and returned a punt 65 yards for a touchdown on the first play of the fourth quarter to extend their lead to 56-7. Bridgewater ran in one more touchdown with 6:07 to play for its final score.

Graduate student linebacker Tre' Maxwell and junior linebacker Anthony Brunelli led Averett defensively with eight tackles apiece, with Brunelli getting a sack. Freshman cornerback Joziah Campbell also notched his third career interception.
 
Averett returns home to play Randolph-Macon College on Oct. 19 for Homecoming.
