SANDESTIN, Fla. — Averett University men's golf tied for 21st as a team at the Golfweek October Classic, which concluded Tuesday at The Raven Golf Club.
The Cougars, who are receiving votes in the Bushnell/Golfweek Coaches Poll, shot a collective 31-over-par 883 on the par-71, 6,623-yard course. No. 7 Washington and Lee University's program-record 16-under on Monday easily helped the Generals pull away to win the event by seven strokes at 30-under.
After shooting 11-over on each of the first two rounds, Averett improved its score on the final day with a combined 9-over 293 to finish out the three-day event.
For the second day in a row, freshman
Benjamin Afzelius turned in the top score for Averett. He shot a 1-under 70 over the final 18 holes to finish at 5-over for the tournament, which placed him in a tie for 56th in a competitive field featuring many of the top teams in the country. Senior
Killian O'Reilly shot 3-over on the final day to finish two strokes back at 7-over Junior
Alexander Vidmo was two strokes behind O'Reilly with a 9-over 225. Freshman
Nick Baum concluded the tournament at 12-over and junior
Miguel Rodriguez Lamana finished at 18-over for the Cougars.
Three golfers finished with the top score for the tournament at 11-under, including Washington and Lee's Jonathan McEwen and Elias Malakoff along with Carnegie Mellon University's Justin Chan.
Averett returns to action Oct. 21-22 at Berry College's Chick-fil-A Invitational.
