DANVILLE, Va. — Averett University women's soccer fell to Virginia Wesleyan University in conference play, 3-1.
Virginia Wesleyan (5-4-3, 5-1-0 ODAC) jumped ahead of Averett (3-8-2, 2-5-0 ODAC) early on to establish the tone of the game moving forward. The Marlins scored two goals in rapid succession after the opening whistle, with the first coming in the sixth minute, and the second following just over three minutes later. Averett's best efforts could not result in any serious threats to the Virginia Wesleyan net, as the game entered the half with a 2-0 score line in favor of the visitors.
The Cougars' defense tightened up big time in the second half, allowing just one goal late in the game with the offense pushing for a comeback. Senior Celia de Diego sparked the comeback efforts with a fantastic solo run, slicing through defenders, before finding sophomore Leah Brethren making a late run into the box. Brethren capitalized on de Diego's efforts to slot a ball just out of the keeper's reach for Averett's lone goal. Sophomore Tiia Chrons helped lock things down with six saves on the day.
One final home game remains on the schedule for Averett, as the Cougars will celebrate senior day with Sweet Briar College coming to town for a 5 p.m. date on Wednesday.
