Men's golf places fifth, two Cougars finish in top 10 at O'Brient-Jensen Memorial

2GREENSBORO, N.C. — Freshman Benjamin Afzelius tied for second place and Averett University men's golf finished fifth as the O'Brient-Jensen Memorial hosted by Guilford College concluded Tuesday at The Cardinal by Pete Dye.

Afzelius held the overall lead entering the final holes, but finished the day at 2-over-par to end the two-day tournament with an even-par 142, one stroke behind medalist Daniel Suter of Gettysburg College. Afzelius matched Methodist University's Haden Ruby as runner-up on the par-71, 6,778-yard course.

The Cougars, ranked No. 34 in the official NCAA rankings, held their own in the top three of the team leaderboard for most of the day before sliding to fifth place late. Averett shot a collective 33-over. No. 3 Methodist won the tournament by five strokes with a 16-over 584, while No. 6 Sewanee was second. No. 12 Huntingdon College and No. 13 Guilford tied for third, two strokes ahead of Averett.

Averett did finish higher than two top-10 teams and four top-20 teams.

Senior Killian O'Reilly also turned in a top-10 individual performance for the Cougars, shooting 5-over. Miguel Rodriguez Lamana finished at 13-over, freshman Nick Baum shot 15-over and freshman Zach Alway finished at 21-over. Senior Hunter Crute, playing as an individual, ended the 36-hole tournament at 27-over.

The tournament is Averett's final event of the fall season.
