GREENSBORO, N.C. — Averett University women's soccer fell to Guilford College in the team's season finale, 5-0.
Averett (4-9-3, 3-6-1 ODAC) faced off against Guilford (12-3-2, 6-2-1 ODAC) for its final road trip of the season, needing a win to keep hopes of a conference tournament berth alive.
The Quakers struck first as they staked a claim to an early lead, with the home side's goal coming in the 19th minute, and set the tone for the game. The Cougars pushed their attack forward, needing a win and three points, as a draw would do no good for the team's postseason dreams. The offensive efforts left Averett susceptible to the Guilford attack, and the Quakers tacked one more goal on before the whistle sounded for halftime.
The Cougars came out of the break continuing to pour every last effort into their attack, but the Guilford back line remained steady, turning away every charge towards the net from the Averett attacking force. Guilford added three goals to its tally in the second half, extending the lead out to 5-0 as the final whistle sounded through the North Carolina night.
The result closes the book on the Cougars' 2024 campaign, as Averett sits on the outside looking in for the upcoming Old Dominion Athletic Conference tournament.
