DANVILLE, Va. — Averett University football scored twice in the final quarter, but it wasn't enough to come back in a 41-14 home loss to Shenandoah University on Saturday afternoon on Daly Field at Frank R. Campbell Stadium.
Shenandoah (6-2, 3-2 ODAC) took its opening possession 61 yards on 10 plays, finishing it with a 1-yard touchdown run to go up 7-0. The Hornets added a second touchdown less than five minutes later, then they added a third score to take a 21-0 advantage with 3:21 to play by taking advantage of an Averett interception deep in Cougars' territory.
In the second quarter, Shenandoah added a 21-yard field goal midway through, then tacked on another rushing touchdown with 23 seconds left to extend its lead to 31-0 by halftime. The Hornets added another touchdown and field goal in the third quarter to make it 41-0.
Averett (2-6, 0-5 ODAC) had trouble piecing together extensive drives in the first half, totaling just 69 yards on 24 offensive plays from scrimmage. However, the Cougars found more success and consistency in the second half. Averett put together two scoring drives in the fourth quarter. Both touchdowns came on 1-yard quarterback dives by sophomore
Trevor Testerman. Testerman also had a two-point conversion pass to sophomore receiver
Jason Moran.
The Cougars finished with 240 yards of offense. Testerman completed 11 of 19 passes for 117 yards and also rushed for 46 yards and two touchdowns.
Graduate linebacker
Tre' Maxwell again led the defense with 10 total tackles, including seven solo. Freshman safety
Jeremiah Marks made his first career interception.
Averett returns to action on Nov. 9 with its Senior Day against Guilford College.
