ADRIAN, Mich. — Nationally ranked Averett University men's wrestling opened its 2024-25 campaign with four first-place champions and 21 overall placers while finishing sixth in the team standings at Saturday's Adrian College Invitational.

Averett, ranked No. 21 by the National Wrestling Coaches Association and No. 24 by The Open Mat in tournament rankings, took home first place at 125 pounds as senior Mason Barrett rolled through his weight class with three wins. In the first-place match, Barrett defeated Adrian's Adrian Rosas by a 5-0 decision.

Freshman Kyree Flamer made a strong collegiate debut by winning the 125-pound freshman/sophomore bracket title. Flamer won four matches and edged Henry Ford College's Jacob Campbell with a 10-4 decision. Sophomore A.J. Orlando III placed first in the 133-pound freshman/sophomore bracket by going 3-0 and finishing the day with a 9-4 decision over Mount St. Joseph College's Addison Breeding. Freshman Andres Cortes also won his freshman/sophomore bracket at 157 pounds by going 3-0 and taking down Henry Ford's Carter Simota in the first-place match with a 6-4 decision.

Senior Jamar Christian finished as the runner-up at 197 pounds, and Averett totaled six third-place finishes, two fourth-places, sixth fifth-places, two sixth-places, four seventh-places and one eighth-place finish.

Wabash College placed first in the team standings at 177.0 points, with Adrian taking second, Case Western Reserve University placing third and Trine University finishing fourth. Heidelberg University was fifth, just ahead of Averett in the 11-team tournament.

Averett returns to action on Saturday, Nov. 9, at home with a pair of duals.
