NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — Averett University women's volleyball fell to the University of Mary Washington 3-1 in four sets on Friday to open play at the Christopher Newport University Invitational.
Mary Washington (13-15, 0-0 CAC) took Sets 1 and 2 with clse scores of 25-17 and 25-19. Averett (12-16, 6-6 ODAC) kept it tight in the first two sets, and eventually turned the corner in Set 3 to get a 25-23 win and force a fourth set. The Eagles bounced back to take Set 4 25-16 to defeat the Cougars.

Dayton Moore led the Cougars' offense with 18 assists, while fellow senior setter

Erin Gray paced the Cougars' defense once again, tallying 17 digs. Moore and sophomore
Kadence Woodlief also contributed 11 digs a piece for Averett.
The Cougars will return for Day 2 of the CNU Invitational when they face Berry College and Christopher Newport University on Saturday, starting at 11 a.m.
