Averett at a Glance: Competitive through most of the contest versus visitors Johnson & Wales, Averett University women's basketball staggered in the final quarter, as the Wildcats defeated the Cougars 59-48 on Monday afternoon.
DaiShaundria Giggetts produced her third scoring output of 20 or more points this winter, with a game-high 21, and also came away with five steals and five rebounds.
Brianna Sams lead the effort on the glass, with six rebounds, and
Zariia America posted a new career-high in assists with four. Averett as a team converted more free throws than its counterparts, 15-13. Defensively, the team swiped with great efficiency, leading the steal margin 13-4.
Methodist at a Glance: For a second consecutive day, Methodist University women's basketball played host to a fellow USA South Athletic Conference foe, this time against Brevard College. After taking a double-digit lead into the fourth quarter, the Monarchs had to fend off a Tornados comeback attempt to pick up a 54-51 win on Wednesday. McGaughnea and Kiley Hicks recorded the final Methodist points to give their team a two-possession advantage until a Brevard triple by Josie Hester cut it to one with 46 seconds left. The Tornados did get the ball back one last time, after a missed Monarch basket, with less than 20 seconds. Petty-Wilkins drove into the lane to try to get the layup but missed, and Methodist was able to secure the rebound and the victory. Leading the Monarchs in scoring was Hicks, who had a team-high 13 points. She also co-led the team in rebounds with eight while adding three steals. Aneesa Irizarry had a nice overall game as she recorded six points, eight rebounds, four steals, a block, and a career-high nine assists.
