GRANTHAM, Pa. — No. 21 Averett University men's wrestling opened up the first day of action in the Petrofes Invitational hosted by Messiah University on Friday. Four Cougars went undefeated during Day 1 to advance to the semifinals scheduled for Saturday.

At 125 pounds, nationally ranked senior Mason Barrett won his first two matches by fall, pinning Shenandoah University's Elliot Rivera (2:42) and Misericordia University's Hayden Best (3:24). He then advanced to Saturday's semifinals thanks to a 15-0 tech fall win over Springfield College's Esuar Ordonez in the quarterfinals.

Sophomore A.J. Orlando III also was victorious in his first three matchups at 133 pounds, earning a 5-0 decision against Alvernia University's James King before picking up a 16-2 major decision over Muhlenberg College's Jace Yannuciello to get him into the quarterfinals. Orlando advanced to the semifinals with his 8-4 decision over Adrian College's Ali Jaber.

At the heavier weights, junior Jacob Jimenez advanced to the semifinals with a thrilling 12-9 win in overtime against Springfield College's Casey Allen. Jimenez got to the quarterfinals with a 12-4 major decision over Gettysburg College's James Doliscar at 197, and followed with an 18-2 tech fall of Bridgewater State University's Hayden Garland.

Junior Braeden Fluke, meanwhile, pinned his first three opponents at 285 pounds to get to the semifinals. It took him less than a minute to pin Greensboro College's Jacob Barlow (0:56) and then he also got the win by fall against Shenandoah's Rives Hargis (1:30). In the quarterfinals, he continued to shine with another pin against Alvernia's Brian Czaus (2:29).

One other Cougar advanced to the quarterfinals. At 157, senior Anthony Taylor dominated in his first two matches with two wins by technical fall. He beat Shenandoah's Bryan Mpengo 19-4 and Muhlenberg's Charles Levin 17-1. However, in the quarterfinals, he lost 18-3 to nationally ranked Chance Babb of Alvernia.

Averett had a number of wrestlers who lost early and continued to battle through the consolation rounds in an effort to place Saturday. As a team, Averett sits in fourth place in the standings through Day 1.
