DANVILLE, Va. – Averett University women's lacrosse kicked off its season with an 18-4 loss to Piedmont University.
The Cougars (0-1) got on the board In the game's first minute courtesy of a free position goal scored by junior
Faith Bowlin. Piedmont (1-1) tied things up a short while later before a goal just past the halfway mark of the quarter vaulted the Lions ahead. Bowlin tallied her second goal of the season at the 3:15 mark in the first quarter, leveling the score at 2-2. A quick answer by Piedmont put the Lions back on the board, and gave the visiting side a lead that would not be surrendered. Bowlin continued to shine brightest among the Cougars, as she tallied her third goal of the contest in the closing moments of the first half. Piedmont carried an 8-3 advantage over Averett heading into the break.
The Lions opened the second half of play in the same form that they showed in the first, as Piedmont grew its lead to 12-3 before the Cougar's next score. Freshman
Ava Soucek put Averett on the board for the first and only time in the second half with a crafty finish at the 10:17 mark of the third quarter. The goal by Soucek marked the first in a blossoming career for the Pennsylvania native. The rest of the day's festivities came up all Piedmont, as the Lions extended their advantage in the closing quarter, closing the contest 18-4.
Averett returns to action with a visit to Methodist University on Saturday, March 2, at 3 p.m.
