DANVILLE, Va.— Averett University baseball fell to Greensboro College 7-6 on Tuesday afternoon on Owen-Fulton Field.
In the fifth inning, junior
Brandt Brophy led off with a single down the right field line. Â Junior
Gavin Colwell smacked a double down the left field line to send Brophy to third. Freshman
Jack Turner roped an RBI-Triple into center field to give Averett (1-5, 0-0 ODAC) a 5-1 lead over Greensboro (4-0, 0-0 USA South).
In the bottom of the first, sophomore
Trevor Testerman led off with a single. Brophy sent Testerman to third on a double down the right field line. Junior
Gavin Colwell slapped a single through the right side to send Testerman home and advance Brophy to third. On the next play, Brophy stole home and Colewell stole second. Colwell later scored after an RBI-single off the bat of redshirt junior
Luke Harris to give the Cougars an early 3-0 lead.
Sophomore
Tim Schware was on the mound for Averett for the first six innings of play. In the second inning, Schware gave up his only run of the game. He walked the first batter and struck out the next two, but a double to right field allowed Greensboro to get on the board. The Cougars took Schware out to give him some rest in the top of the seventh. In the eighth inning, the Cougars had some pitching struggles, which allowed the Pride to score four runs to tie the game up 5-5.
In the bottom of the eighth, sophomore
Chris Byrd was walked. Graduate student
Nolan Maccabe came in to Pinch run for Byrd. Turner laid down a sacrifice bunt to put Maccabe in scoring position. Freshman
Drew Skinner poked a single up the middle to score Maccabe and put the Cougars up 6-5. In the top of the ninth, Averett's pitching struggles continued. After walking a batter and hitting one, a ground out advanced the runners to second and third. A single scored one run to tie things up. A bunt single allowed the Pride to take a 7-6 lead.
Schware allowed just five hits and one run with six strikeouts through 6.1 innings of work. Brophy went 2-for-5 with a double. Colwell went 2-for-5 with an RBI. Harris and Skinner both had an RBI on the day.
The Cougars are back in action tomorrow when they host Mid-Atlantic Christian University for a doubleheader beginning at noon.
