Baseball falls to Pfeiffer in resumed opener, second game of day

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Misenheimer, N.C. — Averett University baseball picked up in the top of the sixth inning against Pfeiffer University to resume Tuesday's game that was stopped due to a lack of light. In the resumed opener, the Cougars lost 12-3 and lost 11-6 in the second game of the day..

In the bottom of the fourth inning of the resumed opener, redshirt junior Luke Harris swatted a single into center field. Junior Preston Robbins followed up with a single into left field. Junior Caden Grider poked a single down the left field line to load the bases. Harris scored on a fielding error by the shortstop. Sophomore Trevor Testerman hit a sacrifice fly into right field to score Robbins. Senior Brandt Brophy hit a single to second base to make the score 4-3. 

In the resumed game, Pfeiffer (3-2, 0-0 USA South) took advantage of some defensive struggles in the top of the first, scoring three runs. The Falcons scored another run in the second inning. Pfeiffer extended its lead, tacking on eight unanswered runs against Averett (2-10, 0-0 ODAC).

In the second game, the Falcons got on the board quickly after a walk to lead off the first. A sacrifice bunt followed by an RBI-single scored the runner. The Cougars had some defensive struggles in the bottom of the third and fourth inning, that allowed Pfeiffer to score four additional runs. In the top of the fifth, sophomore Ryan Toney came in to pinch hit for Grider and drew a walk. Junior Mason Williams was walked as well. Toney advanced to third on a ball caught in foul territory on the first base side. Brophy swatted a single up the middle to score Toney and advance Williams. Junior Preston Robbins advanced the runners to second and third off a single hit through the left side. Redshirt freshman Calder Garris was hit by pitch to score Williams. Maccabe was walked, followed by a balk to make the score 5-4. 

In the bottom of the sixth and seventh inning, Pfeiffer tacked on five runs. In the top of the eighth, freshman Drew Skinner hit a single into center field and later advanced to second on a wild pitch. Williams singled and advanced to second on a throwing error by the shortstop and Skinner managed to score. Testerman poked a single up the middle to make the score 11-6.
